The series producer also released the official synopsis of Season 3:

As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

"Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery.

"They must fight back, put everything on the line - or risk losing each other forever.

Previously, Henry Cavill playing Geralt posted several pictures of his time with the black horse Hector as Roach in the film. The actor had started his physical work-out and horseback riding to prepare for the role. In The Witcher game and movies, Geralt names all his horses "Roach".

The Witcher Season 3 is expected to be released in 2023, most likely at the end of the year as usual for the previous 2 seasons.

The Witcher: Why the Wild Hunts Target Princess Cirilla? 💃

In The Witcher series, the Wild Hunts are one of the forces actively hunting Ciri, and they become Ciri's constant obsession. In the final episode of Season 2, when drawn in the home world of the Deathless Mother, Ciri once again faced these horse riders.

The concept of multiverse, parallel worlds has constantly appeared in recent movies: Marvel movies, DC movies, His Dark Materials, Lucifer … However, the concept is not new, but it has appeared quite often in European literatures and comic books since the mid-20th century, which have now been adapted for cinema.

The concept of multiple worlds/spheres  also exists in The Witcher Universe.

In Season 2 of the series, the new monsters are mostly from other worlds: the Voleth Meir (Deathless Mother), the tree-shaped Leshy monster, the Chernobog dragon… Since they're unfamiliar, Geralt finds it harder to fight against them.

The Monoliths which are scattered across the Continent, one even in the lobby of Kaer Morhen Castle, turns out to be portals between worlds. In episode 8, while trying to push the Deathless Mother back to her world, Geralt, Yen, and Ciri were drawn into a strange land - and that is the home of the Wild Hunts.

Origin of the Wild Hunt

Wild Hunt's costumes make it easy for observers to mistake them for the undead or zombie or ghost, without flesh, but in fact they belong to a race of the Elves.

Shared the same ancestors, the Wild Hunt, also known as the Wraith of Mörhogg in the local dialect, belong to the Aen Elle clan, while the Elves now living on the Continent belong to the Aen Seidhe clan. Thousands of years ago, the Wild Hunts left the Continent to another world, where there were two dominant species at that time, humans and Unicorns.

The Wild Hunts gradually exterminated the humans of this world, and turned the Unicorns into their followers, in fact their mounts. Later, in a somewhat harsh world, the Wild Hunts need slaves to serve them, while Unicorns are unlikely to become useful slaves. The Wild Hunts seek to cross over to other worlds to capture humans and even the Aen Seidhe Elves as slaves.

In The Witcher, the Unicorns are intellectually underdeveloped compared to humans and elves, but they have the special ability to open transverse portals and travel across worlds. Wild Hunt use Unicorns for their slave-hunting goals.

Why do the Wild Hunt target Ciri?

Wild Hunt's slave hunting also faced many difficulties. The Unicorns hate Wild Hunt so they rarely cooperate; opening the portals across the world is not a simple thing, and only a few Wild Hunts pass through the portals at a time. They only catch a few slaves after each hunt.

After discovering that Ciri has the Elder blood, they changed their focus from the normal slave hunting to focusing on capturing Ciri.

The goal of the Wild Hunts is to obtain Ciri's Elder blood to make a special potion (like the Witchers' mutagen), making them more powerful. They also want to use Ciri's power to open the portals to slaughter and conquer other worlds.

In Episode 8 Season 2, it seems that Voleth Meir (Deathless Mother) has possessed the Alpha of the Wild Hunt or Voleth Meir is actually a Wild Hunt. It's likelyy that in Season 3 Ciri would continue to be the hunt target of the Wild Hunt, more aggressively.

Blood Origin: The First Witcher and the Golden Age of Elves 1,200 Prior 💃

Netflix rarely puts Teaser or Trailers in the Credits section after each episode like Marvel's style, but this happened in Episode 8 (finale) of The Witcher Season 2. There is the trailer for the 6-episode series Blood Origin, which is a prequel in the Witcher Universe, scheduled to air in 2022.

Blood Origin is set in the Continent of the Elves 1,200 years before the events of "The Witcher" as it is now "colonized" and under human domination. As we see in The Witcher, the Elves are now a weak minority on a Continent they once ruled over.

The history of the Elves in the Sage "The Witcher" is described quite sketchly, so it is difficult to imagine how much it had advanced in the past, and why the Elves always mentions their "past glory" or "golden time" they once embraced.

De Barra - one of the creators for the Witcher universe (The Witcher, Nightmare of the Wolf, Blood Origin ...) said something like ...when you look at our own history, the societies that were at their peak high, like the Roman Empire or the Maya Empire, there was just before the fall and then we are in the dark.

The history of the Elves in The Witcher cinematic universe will be built like that, and it's definitely not the humans would help to civilize the elves society as we may think.

Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time - exploring the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “Conjunction of the Spheres, when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Coup in Aretuza

This book focuses on the coup d'etat at Aretuza Magic Academy by some mage accomplices to Emperor Emhyr of Nilfgaard. This coup paved the way for Nilfgaardians to sweep north and annex many of independent kingdoms.

Season 2 of the series revealed the love relationship between Tissaia and Vilgefortz. This would prove to be a weakness of Tissaia, which led to blunders, and subsequently the destruction of Aretuza and the fall of the North.

At the time of the coup, the trio Yennefer, Ciri and Geralt were present at Aretuza. They suffered many injuries and had to be separated after the coup, especially Geralt fell into a critical condition.

Ciri once again escaped from Nilfgaardians' hand, but she became alone on her way to survival, without Geralt by her side.

Emperor Emhyr (Duny, Urcheon of Erlenwald)

The one who knew all about Ciri's Ancestral Elder bloodline and begins to hunt her down even before Ciri even knows of her powers, is Emperor Emhyr (Bart Edwards) - the biological father of Ciri.

The character appeared in Season 1 at the Banquet for Princess Pavetta hosted by Queen Calenthe. At this point, he was still in his half-human, half-hedgehog appearance, and thanks to Geralt's support and protection, he was able to escape Calenthe's assassination blade and lift the curse to return to his human form.

At the age of 13, Emhyr's father Fergus var Emreis, emperor of Nilfgaard at the time, was overthrown, imprisoned, and tortured by a nobleman named Usurper. Emhyr was turned into a hedgehog by the a witch and chased into the woods.

From Nilfgaard, Emhyr traveled to the North i.e Cintra and used the nickname "Duny, Urcheon of Erlenwald" to find a way to break the curse. In 1237, while prowling the wooded area of Cintra, he encountered the badly wounded King Roegner (Calenthe's husband) and saved his life. Emhyr was rewarded with the Law of Surprise - being entitled to King Roegner's firstborn child.

The curse on Emhyr was still far from complete: every night Emhyr regained his human form – handsome and charming. This helped him approach and get to know Princess Pavetta (King Roegner's daughter) and the two fell in love before Calenthe held the said Banquet, even Pavetta was pregnant with Ciri.

After Ciri's birth, Emhyr (who had yet to reveal his identity as the deposed prince of Nilfgaard) sought to bring Pavette and Ciri back to their homeland to prepare for revenge. However, under Queen Calenthe's close supervision, Emhyr wanted to pretend that the entire family had perished in a shipwreck; but unfortunately Pavette drowned, Ciri survived and was raised by Calenthe, and Emhyr alone returned to Nilfgaard.

In Nilfgaard, Emhyr gathered loyalists to his father and waged a revolution against Usurper, regaining the throne.

In Season 1 of The Witcher, Emhyr was the mastermind of Nilfgaard's attack on Cintra, which was followed by an assault to the North before being stopped at Sodden Hill; however, Emhyr did not show up. In Season 2, Emhyr only appears in the final minutes of the series when he arrives in Cintra himself.

In The Witcher Season 3, perhaps Emperor Emhyr will be among  the main characters, engaging directly in the key developments of the series, including the coup at Aretuza.
