House of the Dragon: Why Seasmoke Picks Addam as its Rider?

In House of the Dragon Season 2, dragon Seasmoke remains unbond (without a rider) for years after Laenor Velaryon faked his death and left Dragonstone to start a new life with his male lover. Seasmoke rejects (all kills) people who try to claim it, but the dragon itself picks Addam as its new master and approaches him to “tell” him its intentions.

The origins of Addam Velaryon

Addam Velaryon (Clinton Liberty), born Addam of Hull, was a legitimized bastard from Driftmark of dragonseed descent, like his younger brother Alyn. During the Dance of the Dragons, Addam became a knight and the heir to House Velaryon of Driftmark

In the book, Addam was fifteen years old at the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons (or the current timeline of the show season 2); Addam and his brother Alyn, whose mother was Marilda of Hull, had silver hair and purple eyes. In the show, Addam is probably in his twenties and has both hair and eyes in black.

Addam's blood father remains a matter of dispute since his mother claimed he and his brother Alyn were fathered by Ser Laenor Velaryon - a fact that many found impossible due to Laenor's known sexual preference for men. Another rumor said they were fathered by Laenor's father, Lord Corlys Velaryon, and this is more likely.

Addam becomes the Dragonrider of Seasmoke

In the book, when Prince Jacaerys Velaryon decided that Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's blacks needed more dragonriders during the Dance of the Dragons, many men on Dragonstone came forward to answer the prince's call. One of them, Addam, managed to bond with Seasmoke. However, when his younger brother Alyn tried to tame Sheepstealer, the dragon set fire to his cloak. Seasmoke drove off Sheepstealer as Addam used his own cloak to beat out the flames.

In the show, Seasmoke finds to Addam itself. There is a time when Seasmoke circles above Addam as if to observe him, and eventually it chases after him, then bends in front of him with eyes and a manner saying “Hi master, here I am. Please be my rider!”

Is Addam’s origins related to Targaryen?

Addam’s silver hair in the book maybe an indicator that he may inherit some Targaryen DNA from his ancestors, first of all from his rumored true father being Lord Corlys Velaryon.

Such theory is more likely, since both the Targaryens and Velaryons originated in Esso before moving to Westeros. They have shared a history of thousands year together, and with reckless sexual behaviors of the Targaryens, their seeds can be found anywhere, who knows enough?

Supposed that Addam does not have any Targaryen DNA, the common perception that no one else but Targaryens can become dragonrider should be challenged.

In such case, Seasmoke picks Addam possibly because he has much resemblance with its former master Laenor, or it senses some unique quality inside him.

No matter what the season may be, Addam and Seasmoke are going to play big part in the next major battles of the House of the Dragon, possibly to occur in Season 3.
