In this episode, there is flashback of the time before Ciri was born. Jaskier is going to perform at a banquet organized by Queen Calanthe of Cintran (who died in episode 1). Jaskier has been sleeping around with a number of Cintran ladies,  he is afraid that some of the lords may attack him so he needs Geralt to join the banquet as a "bodyguard" just in case.

That is a marriage feast thrown for Calanthe's daughter -  Princess Pavetta, and suitors from different kingdoms are in attendance as candidates.  They one by one greet the Queen and loudly introduce their profiles, but princess Pavetta seems  interested in none of them.

Then a masked man shows up and reveals himself to be Lord Urcheon of Erlenwald, and is welcomed by Pavetta. Queen Calanthe uses force to remove his mask to finally see him as a half-man, half-hedgehog. Calanthe orders Geralt to slay the knight, but the witcher refuses on saying that  this is no monster. In stead, Geralt joins the knight against the attacks by royal guards.

Years ago, Urcheon saved the life of Calanthe's husband, then King Roegner. In return he claimed the Law of Surprise, which means that Urcheon would be offered with a boon – the firstborn child of King Roegner (being Princess  Pavetta) .  Calanthe is not pleased, so she cheats to kill Urcheon  with a stabber. Pavetta  suddenly summons the magic power to create a devastating dust storm to end the fight and embraces Urcheon. Actually, they've met before, secretly forming a bond.

Finally, the Queen is decided to honor the Law of Surprise: Pavetta and Urcheon  are to be married, and Urcheon returns to his human shape just with a kiss. Calanthe insists Geralt be rewarded for his efforts, and he eventually claims the Law of Surprise unintentionally. And just as he does, Pavetta vomits: she's pregnant—with, you guessed it, Ciri. And that’s destiny.

Years later, when Ciri grows up, Calanthe does not want to honor the Law of Surprise with Geralt because she wants to keep Ciri with her. It’s believed that her break of the destiny leads to the failure of Cintra in the battle against Nilfgaard’s invasion.
