KIRIGAN'S AMBITIONS AND SCHEMES

During the journey through the Shadow Fold, Kirigan controls Alina's power to summon just enough light to protect the ship's safety, instead of summoning the full light to remove the darkness. Kirigan makes it clear that the Shadow Fold is his most powerful weapon, and there is no reason for him to have it dismantled. As the ship is about to leave the Fold and reach the West Bank of Ravkan, Kirigan orders Zoya to stop the ship, he summons the dark to widen the Fold, covering the Western Ravkan General and the soldiers waiting outside. In fact, before that, Western Ravkan was intending when the ship crew appeared, they would kill them all. Their main target was Alina. Kirigan seems to have known the plot of Western Ravkan in advance, so he took action first, both to stop the plot and to avenge the previous failed assassination attempt on Alina. Kirigan also wants to show his power to the emissaries from Fjerda and Shu Han to submit to Ravka.

ALINA CHALLENGES KIRIGAN

When Kirigan's intentions are revealed, Zoya, the Crows, and Mal work together to stop the dark from spreading. They simultaneously attack Kirigan and the Grisha entourage towards the goal: freeing Alina so that she could summon the light.

Alina manages to cut the bond mark on Kirigan's hand with a knife, thereby breaking the link between them. She summons the light to stop the expansion of the Fold. In the face of Alina's miraculous power, one fact is now made clear: the Tag chose the person to amplify the power and it was Alina the chosen one, even though it was Kirigan who killed it. Mal and Kirigan fight each other and are thrown off the ship, but Mal makes it back in the end. Zoya lets the ship keep moving to get out of the Fold.

NINA & MATTHIAS

Meanwhile, from the snowy mountains, Matthias and Nina return to the town of Arkesk. They are in Ravka now, which means that Nina is no longer a prisoner, but she has to hide Matthias because he is a hostile Fjerdan. In the motel room, they dream of going somewhere where they can be together, because it can't be neither Ravka nor Fjerda. Sitting in the tavern downstairs, enjoying waffles, Nina and Matthias are interrupted by the Fedyor who knocks Matthias out by putting him on cardiac arrest and demanding Nina to hand him over. Nina had previously overheard men hunting escaped slaves for the bounty. She then shouts that Matthias is a slave who captured her. Bounty hunters swarm over, challenging Fedyor to take away Matthias, and Nina follows them as a witness later.

"SHADOW AND BONE" SEASON 1'S CLIFFHANGERS

Alina, Zoya, Kaz, Jesper, Inej and Mal have arrived safely in Western Ravka and between them some kind of unspoken alliance has just established. Inej promises that she will always be available if Alina needs her help and Jesper promises not to try to kidnap her (again).

Alina gives Kaz an expensive piece of jewelry that she is forced to wear on Kirigan's orders – a precious item that can help Kaz pay off all his debts. Alina wants to destroy the Fold once and for all, but she is not strong enough. Zoya warns Alina that she cannot stay in Ravka. Apparat will take over when the King is ill and will blame Kirigan and Alina for the West Ravka massacre. The best way is to hide, gather forces and regain strength before returning. On the edge of the Shadow Fold, the evil-looking Kirigan suddenly appears, alive, dirty with black blood running through his veins (but still handsome) and mutter, "Follow me", and several giant dark creatures from the Fold step out and follow in his footsteps.

Episode 7 of “Shadow and Bone” - The Unsea recalls the story of Kirigan (then called Darkling) accidentally creating the Shadow Fold with regeneration magic hundreds of years ago. Kirigan successfully uses the Tags's antlers to bind and control Alina's light summoning power.

DARKLING CREATED THE SHADOW FOLD

At that time, in fear of Kirigan's treason, the King sent troops to capture Kirigan and kill his lover, the Healer Luda, despite Kirigan's pleas. Enraged, Kirigan wielded the scythe of darkness and wiped out the King's army.

Knowing that the King would still send more troops to find him, Kirigan decided to read the ancient books of Morozova to find a spell to create his own army to fight. Morozova is Kirigan's grandfather (Bagrah's father), who created 3 creatures capable of amplifying Grisha's power: the Tag, the Firebird and the Ice Dragon (Rusalye or Sea Whip).

Kirigan's intentions were thwarted by his mother Bagrah, who believed that they should only use Small Science instead of Magic, and that the use of merzost would bring about unintended consequences.

When the King's army arrived, Kirigan used spells and regeneration magic to transform the army into creatures under his command. However, the dark energy in Kirigan broke out and turned a large area into the Shadow Fold, also known as Unsea, dividing the Ravka Kingdom into East and West regions.

KIRIGAN AND ALINA's LINK

Back in the present time, Alina and Mal finally reach the Tag's location, but just as they find it, Kirigan and his Grishas also appear. Kirigan wants to kill the Tag to amplify his power, while Alina wanted to protect it.

Because Mal is mortally wounded in the fight, Kirigan uses Mal to force Alina to give up the Tag, and kill it with his own hands. Kirigan then orders David to press the antlers of Tag against Alina's sternum and use magic to bind it to a mark on Kirigan's hand. From here, Kirigan can control Alina's light summoning power.

ALL IN ONE SHIP THROUGH THE DARK WAY

Kaz Brekker later admits to Inej that Alina's light summoning powers are real and not an illusion, and he seems to now forgive for Inej's previous actions of letting Alina go. They try to return to Western Ravka by posing as entourage escorting diplomatic delegations from other countries who visit Ravka for the light summoning performance.

Mal also manages to escape from the barracks. Kirigan forces Alina to go on a ship carrying emissaries leaving Eastern Ravkan through the Shadow Fold.

It looks like all of our main characters will be on this ship.

Kirigan comes to know West Ravka's Independence Scheme

After killing the fake Alina, the Conductor is captured and interrogated by Kirigan, and from there Kirigan learns of the West Ravkan General's plot to kill the light summoner to clear the way for his autonomous plan. . They set up a tent together and Alina uses her magic to keep them warm. The next day, Alina heals Mal's wounds and they plan to find the Tag. Alina thinks that if she could use it as an amplifier, she could develop enough power to destroy the Fold. They reach the border with the Kingdom of Fjerda, where Mal last saw the Tag.

THE CROWS' DESPERATE SITUATION: NO GOALS, NO MONEY, AND THE CLUB TO BE LOST

After Alina escapes, Kaz Brekker and Inej argue over her failure to stop Alina. Kaz Brekker believes that Alina's power is an illusion. The controversy leads to a truth: if Alina was not delivered, they would have no money and Heleen would have taken over the Ravens Club. This means that Inej will have to serve Heleen as before. During that hopeless moment, they experience another despair when Kirigan track them down. The three struggle in the fight against Kirigan's Grishas. When encountering Kirigan, Kaz Brekker tells him the truth: Alina ran away herself. It is clear that she is no longer interested in being confined by Kirigan. Kirigan tries to kill Kaz, but Kaz manages to escape with a blinding fire.

THE TITANIC SURVIVAL OF NINA AND MATTHIAS

After the storm, Nina and Matthias (Calahan Skogman) help each other stay alive while clinging to a piece of debris floating in the sea. They reach the mainland, build a shelter together, and stay warm together in funny, sweet, naked situations. As time goes on, they bond together – and it is clear that there is another flame burning. Finally, as they walk in the snow together, Matthias admits his feelings for Nina. Amid the romantic setting, Nina suddenly falls through the ice, Matthias saves her life.

LOVE FLAME BETWEEN KIRIGAN AND ALINA

The fact that Alina had not received any letters from Mal for a long time makes her think that Mal had forgotten her. She decides to ask the Tailor Genya Safin to remove the childhood scar on her arm – a way to help her forget Mal and focus on her magic training. Alina also gradually integrates and enjoys the luxurious life at the Royal Palace. The charming and intelligent Kirigan tries to find many ways to win the heart of Alina and the girl easily fell in love. The sublimation moment is perhaps the passionate kiss between Alina and Kirigan – they even planned to do things even hotter than that.

MAL FIND WAY TO THE PALACE WITH HIS STORY ABOUT THE TAG

After a difficult journey and many obstacles, Mal meets Kirigan with the story the magical Tag he saw at the border. Mal refuses to reveal the specific location of the Tag, until he met Alina. While Kirigan is searching for Alina after the Royal Banquet, Bahgra sends someone to trick Mal with the intention of killing him in order to conceal information about the Tag, preventing Kirigan from being able to access the magical beast to amplify his power. . Bahgra also meets Alina in person and tells her the truth about Kirigan: he is the Black Heretic himself and his purpose is not to remove the Fold but to use it to rule the world. Bahgra advises Alina to run away to avoid being manipulated and become Kirigan's "slave".

THE WEST RAVKAN'S PLOT

The Shadow Fold divides Western Ravkan from the imperial court in Eastern Ravkan, making the influence of the palace increasingly limited. The Western Ravkans are also dissatisfied with having to supply boys and girls to the East to increase manpower. The general of the West Ravka, Zlatan, is actively mobilizing the people to establish an independent nation. Zlatan also plots to kill Alina - because she is the one who promises to have the ability to remove the Shadow Fold, making Zlatan's independent scheme to be foiled.

The Crow' Alina Abduction Plan

The Crows successfully infiltrate the Royal Gala Dinner to find a way to capture Alina. Kaz Brekker discover that Alina has a stuntman to distract; he directs the Guide to the fake Alina. As Brekker had predicted, the Guide was complicit with General West Ravkan and his goal was to kill Alina. His killing of the fake Alina cause an uproar throughout the Imperial Palace, with the Grishas of Kirian pursuing the Crows in the Imperial Palace; Inej killed a Grisha to save Brekker. The Crows follow the real Alina. But as they are leading Alina away, Kirigan appears and take her away. The Black Crow's initial plan fails. With no other option, the Crows decide to abandon the plan and leave. However, by accident, Alina chooses to hide in their carriage before it departs.

KIRIGAN'S STORY OF THE SHADOW FOLD

Kirigan asks Alina to call him by his informal name Aleksander. They ride to an old fountain that Kirigan used to visit as a child. There, Kirigan told Alina about the origin of the Shadow Fold and his past. Accordingly, a few hundred years ago, Emperor Anastas recruited a Grisha with the ability to summon the dark, known as the Black Heretic, as a military advisor, helping him conquer other countries. Later, the Black Heretic grew increasingly ambitious for power, causing the king to fear a coup d'etat, so he sent his army to kill the Black Heretic and all the Grishas who were supported him. Outnumbered, the Black Heretic used the black magic Morozova to create his own army. However, he failed, instead of creating an army, he created the Shadow Fold. According to Kirigan, he is a descendant of the Black Heretic; and all he's trying to do is atone for the mistakes of his previous generation, by tearing down the Fold.

MAL SEARCH FOR THE TAG

At Chernast in the North, Mal languishes for a letter from Alina, but in vain. When he hears that General Kirigan is offering a reward to anyone who could find Morozova's Tag to be honored to visit the Imperial Palace; Mal volunteers to accept the mission in the hope of getting a chance to see Alina again, some of his friends also join. In the journey to find the Tag, they only meet herds of ordinary deer. Due to being too absorbed, Mal's team accidentally cross the border and enter the territory of the Fjerda Kingdom and they are attacked. Mal's comrades are all killed; and Mal in the most desperate moment see the Tag appear exactly as in the sketch.

THE PLAN OF THE CROWS INTO THE PALACE

Without the Heartrender's help, the Crows devise a way to infiltrate the Royal Palace by joining a Circus Troupe invited by the Queen to perform at the Great Banquet. The group stage a trick so that the main dancer is injured in an accident and Inej is nominated for the role as alternative. To prepare for the plan, the Crows also spent a lot of effort copying the map of the Royal Palace to locate the room Alina is supposedly living in.

The hypnotized Grisha Nina and the DRSKELLE WARRIOR

After being kidnapped, Nina is put on a ship, along with many other Grishas to be transported to the Kingdom of Fjerda for the Icy Court - where the Grishas will be judged to be evil or not. On the ship, Nina talks to a young Grisha hunter and tries to change his mind, but is completely powerless in the face of an ingrained prejudice. The ship encountered a big storm, the commander ordered him to kill all Grishas onboard as it is about to sink.

KIRIGAN AND ALINA'S LIGHT PERFORMANCE AT THE PLACE

At the grand ballroom, with Kirigan's help, Alina amplifies her magic to demonstrate her ability to summon light. She is admired by the audience; some Grishas come to hug and congratulate Alina with full of kindness. As for Zoya, the Storm Summoner (Squaller), who tried to flirt with Mal while at the camp, sarcastically whispers in Alina's ear that she should go back to the orphanage.

ALINA's TRAINING MAGIC AT THE PLACE

To get revenge on Zoya for the hateful words, Alina chooses her as her battle partner the next day. Zoya seems to be stronger at first and knocks Alina down several times. However, after her jealousy and anger break out, Alina gains her power and punch Zoya in the face. Losing her temper, Zoya unleashes a wind palm to push Alina into a haystack. On the way back from training, Alina happens to meet Apparat - the Emperor's Spiritual Advisor. He gives her an old book: Lives of Saints. Alina is then led to meet the Baghra - a Grisha teacher who is in charge of training her to use light summoning magic. Alina has to work very hard to summon the light herself; Baghra is very disappointed and reveals to Alina that she was able to perform so well in front of the Emperor only because Kirigan was by her side as a magic amplifier.

THE BLCK CROWS IN THE DARK

Meanwhile, in Western Ravka, the Crows and their Guides plan to cross the Shadow Fold and kidnap Alina from the Palace. They plan to enlist the help of a Heartrender, Nina; however, Nina is later captured by a group of Grisah hunters Drüskelle from the Kingdom of Fjerdan, who view the Grishas as demons or evils that needed to be eliminated. The Crows make their way through the Shadow Fold on a coal-powered train. After the initial advantages, the train is discovered by monsters and fiercely attacked the ones on board

Shadow and Bone Episode 2: Kirigan saves Alina on the way to Os Alta

In the Episode “We're All Someone's Monster”, in East Ravka, Alina is brought to meet General Kirigan, who uses a test to prove she is the Sun Summoner. She is then taken to the Ravkan capital Os Alta, where she would be shown to the King and trained to become a powerful Grisha.

The convoy carrying Alina to the capital is attacked by Fjerdan Drüskelle warriors who hunt down the Grisha witches as evils. Most of the Grishas escorting her are killed but she is luckily saved when General Kirigan arrives just in time and uses a shadow scythe killing the assassin from afar. Kirigan takes Alina on his horse, riding to Os Alta.

In Ketterdam, Kaz Brekker is threatened by Pekka Rollins to give up his pursuing the lucrative order, but he insists to obtain it by all means. Inej is promised by Tante Heleen, the owner of a brothel where she was enslaved, to reduce Kaz's outstanding debt to take Inej out on the conditions that Inej would kills a trafficker named Arken.

Meanwhile, Kaz Brekker searches for a man known as The Conductor to help his gang cross the Shadow Fold to reach East Ravka, and later on discovers that guy is Arken, who is Inej’s killing target. Kaz Brekker just appears in time to stop his death.

Shadow and Bone Episode 1: Alina to demonstrate her unknown light summoning power

In Episode 1 titled "A Searing Burst of Light", in the West of Ravka, Alina Starkov, a cartographer is reunited with her childhood friend and now comrade Mal Oryetsev. Mal is assigned into a team to cross the Shadow Fold, and Alina plays a trick to be able to go with him.

The simple trick by Alina is to burn existing maps so a position of  cartographer now becomes a need and then she is assigned to join the team too. 

The sail enters the dark and soon they are attacked by ferocious creatures known as the Volcra, many of whom are killed. When Alina is lifted up by a Volcra, she suddenly emitted a magical light that forces the monsters to fly away, thereby saving the few survivors.

Meanwhile, in the commercial hub city of Ketterdam, a Dregs gang including Kaz Brekker, Inej Ghafa and Jesper Fahey compete with Pekka Rollins to win a job with a huge bonus of 1 million kruge.

They bring a Heartrender to Dreesen - the potential employer, in the hope of getting a lucrative job. Dressen asks the Heartrender to cast spells on Alexei, a surviving sailor on the Abyss ship, to reveal that Alina is a Sun Summoner. Dreesen kills Alexei and orders Kaz Brekker's team to bring Alina to him in exchange for the job.
