In 1909, a Danish expedition led by Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen was trying to find evidence to disprove the US claim of sovereignty over Northeast Greenland. The US claim had been rooted in the idea that Greenland was divided into two different pieces of land, and that the northeast belongs to the United States.
Leaving the crew with the ship Alabama, Mikkelsen and an inexperienced expedition member, Iver Iversen who is actually a mechanic, used a dog sled to travel inland.
After they find the evidence and return, they discover that the Alabama had been damaged by ice, and the crew appeared to have been brought back to the mainland by a whaler.
The two then spend two winters in a tent built from the boards of the ship Alabama, facing shortages of necessities, the cold of the Arctic, a bear attack, despair and loneliness. makes people fall into madness and paranoia.
They are rescued by whalers in the summer of 1912.
Historically, in recognition of Mikkelsen, in 2009 the Royal Danish Navy named a patrol vessel HDMS Ejnar Mikkelsen (P571), a mountain range in eastern Greenland also named the Ejnar Mikkelsen Range.
The main role Mikkelsen was played by actor Nikolaj William Coster-Waldau. He is widely known for his role as Jaime Lannister in the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones.
